All companies rely on sensitive information to maintain a competitive advantage. This could be marketing strategies, client lists, trade secrets, brand ideas and much more. If such information falls into the wrong hands, it can be detrimental for the business.

Unless you’re running a small side project, you’re going to have to share sensitive information with some of your team members. How do you make sure that this information is protected?

It starts with training

At some point, most of us have probably let something sensitive slip out when it shouldn’t have. This can be done accidentally. Simply having a conversation with a friend or family member can see sensitive information spread around quickly. That’s why it’s important for businesses to train team members on the importance of sensitive information and keeping it within the company.

You can emphasize the importance of discretion through written documents like an employee handbook. Verbal training days are extremely useful, but it always helps if employees have it written down. This way, there can be no doubt as to your policies on protecting sensitive company information.

Forming watertight contracts

Another option you have as a business owner is to include clauses on sensitive information in employment contracts. For example, you can utilize non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). These are legally binding contracts that forbid workers and even customers from disclosing sensitive information to outside parties.

Storing sensitive information carefully, whether that be in physical safes or online clouds, is also important. You can use encrypted passwords and much more for digital data. Seeking legal guidance will provide you with more information on the issue.
